Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maryland on September 21, 1947. Stephen's childhood was spent living between Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family lived, and Massachusetts and Maine with his mother and her family. He and his older brother, David attended school in Durham, Maine. Eventually, He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in English.

After graduating from the University of Maine in 1970 (with a Bachelor’s degree in English) Stephen made a living as a teacher and also as a janitor. During this time he wrote short stories. During this time, occasionally one of his short stories would be published in a men's magazine. Many of these stories were later compiled into the NIGHT SHIFT collection. Love also came calling for King, as he married his fiance’ Tabitha Spruce, about a year after graduating from college.

Stephen’s first novel was the unforgettable CARRIE, which was published in the spring of 1973, and successful enough that he was able to stop teaching for a living and concentrate on his writing. CARRIE was made into a motion picture in 1976.
